Golden Hop Award for Ciaurusa Beer
Fratelli Birrafondai was founded in 2013 from a purely Sicilian blood bond, that between Rosario and Santa, and is based on a strong sense of redemption in a complicated land, once "Magna Graecia," which still hides timeless scents, fruits, energies, and beauties today.
"The land, the sun, the orange, the orange blossom, colored our youth; the cycle of the seasons gave a rhythm, a foundation, to the passing time; the fields of wheat and cereals were our favorite hiding places.
The need to return to our roots, to touch, to smell, to blend the good things of the earth, generated in us the desire, the urgency, to bet on an "intoxicating and volcanic project."
Santa is an "anomalous" pharmacist who has developed an overwhelming passion for the brewing world over the years. Together with her brother Rosario, she began her journey as a homebrewer and, thanks to her skills in chemistry and tireless dedication, she gradually managed to transform what was initially born as a simple passion into a real professional activity.
The first female master brewer in Sicily (and among the few in Italy), she has refined her skills in various courses, including high-level ones, and today signs beers that, thanks to their unmistakable "feminine" touch, have become recognizable and appreciated by an ever-growing and demanding clientele.
Her "Ciaurusa" was awarded the first national prize "Luppolo d'Oro 2019" in the Belgian White category.
Rosario is the classic impenitent beer lover. A great expert on Italian and foreign beers, he began his productions tinkering at home with pots, thermometers, and hydrometers. Once he remembered he had a stubborn sister with expertise in chemistry... the rest was history!
He also improved his technique by "brewing" beer with various expert master brewers. First in Milan and then in Florence. Since 2013, together with Santa, he has signed 6 highly original beers that are now entirely produced at their brewery in Misterbianco.
