The Elegance of the Volcano: A Masterful Aging at 800 Meters

Born from the black sands of Southern Etna, this 2014 vintage represents the quintessence of the volcanic terroir. From historic 50-year-old vines, rooted at nearly 800 meters above sea level, Tenuta Papale has crafted a red of extraordinary complexity. Time and skilled craftsmanship have transformed the vibrant power of the volcano into pure velvet, offering a deep and lingering tasting experience.

INGREDIENT ANALYSIS AND TASTE

  • 🌋 High-Altitude Terroir: Purely volcanic soils and an altitude of 750-800 meters a.s.l. give this wine a distinct mineral savoriness, balanced by the North/South exposure which ensures optimal ripening.
  • 🍇 Historic Indigenous Blend: The classic union of 90% Nerello Mascalese (structure and acidic backbone) and 10% Nerello Cappuccio (color and aromas) from 50-year-old vines results in an extract concentration of absolute excellence.
  • ⏳ Long Maceration and Maturation: A full 30 days of maceration on the skins at 22-24°C extracts every phenolic nuance. The subsequent rest of 1 year in oak barrels and 1 year in the bottle smooths the tannins, making the sip full and enveloping.
  • 🍒 Evolved Sensory Profile: In the glass, it appears a luminous ruby red, embellished with noble garnet reflections due to its evolution. The nose opens with a fine bouquet, dominated by red fruit and elegant tertiary notes.
  • 🍷 Structured Alcohol Content: 14% Vol. perfectly supports the wine's architecture, ensuring a very long persistence on the palate and remarkable aging potential.

🍷 The Taste Ambassador recommends:

As this is a 2014 vintage with significant time in wood, I recommend uncorking the bottle at least an hour before serving to allow the wine to oxygenate and open up completely, releasing its tertiary aromas. Serve in large glasses at a temperature of 18°C. This Symposion performs at its best when paired with intense flavors: try it with stewed wild boar shoulder or a classic red meat roast, where its velvety tannins will perfectly cleanse the palate.

QUICK FAQ

Does this wine need to be decanted?
Being a 2014, oxygenation is highly recommended. You can use a decanter or, more simply, uncork the bottle 60-90 minutes before serving it in large glasses.

What is the aging limit for this bottle?
The 2014 Symposion is currently in its optimal drinking window, where its elegance has reached its peak. However, thanks to the excellent acidic backbone typical of soils at 800 meters a.s.l., it can rest in the cellar calmly for another 4-5 years if kept at a constant temperature and humidity.
