The Elegance of Nerello Mascalese in an Exceptional Volcanic Rosé
In San Giovanni Montebello, where the roots of Mount Etna overlook the currents of the Ionian Sea, a rosé is born that is a pure expression of its terroir. The Pittimusa by Cantine Scudero transforms the intensity of the volcano into a glass of rare elegance, the result of organic viticulture and an extremely limited production run of just under two thousand bottles.
Ingredients and Taste Analysis
- 🌋 Volcanic Terroir and Low Yields: Sandy soils of volcanic origin and a strictly limited yield of 50 quintals per hectare ensure an unmistakable aromatic concentration and minerality.
- 🌱 100% Organic Nerello Mascalese: The quintessential native Etna grape, hand-harvested in October and cultivated using the spurred cordon method (6,000 vines/ha) in full compliance with organic farming standards.
- 🧑🍳 Short Maceration and Bâtonnage: The gentle soft pressing involves only 4 hours of skin maceration to extract the perfect rosé hue, followed by 4 months of aging in steel tanks in contact with the fine lees through regular bâtonnage.
- 🍷 Fresh and Persistent Sensory Profile: Vibrant red fruit notes blend with a sharp acidity (6.10 g/l) and a pH of 3.43. On the palate, it is crisp and fresh, with an elegant, markedly mineral finish.

🍷 The Taste Ambassador Recommends:
To fully appreciate the structure provided by the 4 months of bâtonnage, I advise against serving Pittimusa chilled as you would a commercial rosé. The ideal temperature is around 10-12°C. In my experience, the perfect pairing is with a seared red tuna steak or a platter of Nebrodi Black Pig charcuterie: the sharp acidity of the Nerello Mascalese will cleanse the palate perfectly, balancing the richness of the dish.

- 🛒 Artisanal Sicilian Caponata: The perfect sweet-and-sour appetizer whose notes are enhanced by the red fruit hints of the Nerello Mascalese.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the wine derived from organic farming?
Yes, the technical data confirms that the 6,000 vines per hectare from which Pittimusa originates are managed entirely using organic practices, enhancing the volcanic ecosystem without chemical intervention.
Should this rosé be drunk strictly within the year of production?
Although it is created to best express its freshness and notes of small red fruits, the excellent backbone of acidity (6.10 g/l) and the long work on fine lees give it a structure capable of evolving elegantly even 2-3 years after the harvest.
